Your door may be one of the last pieces of your home’s exterior that you consider replacing, even though it is one of the most important.  It both allows homeowners to enter and exit their homes, but it is also the single most important piece of security stopping intruders, and pests, from entering your home.  If your front door is looking worse for wear, take a look at the signs that you need to replace your front door!

Drafts

One of the most obvious signs that your door is in need of replacement is when there is a significant draft coming in under your door.  If you have to put a towel under your door to keep the AC or heat in, your door needs to be replaced. Consider the fact that while you may be able to put a barrier under the door while you’re home to prevent energy loss, while you are gone your home is losing energy from your door’s threshold that could be prevented!

Hard To Operate

Another sign that your door should be replaced is when it becomes difficult to operate.  If your door is scrapping your threshold or even floors while you operate it, it needs to be changed.  Doors, just like any other part of your home, are susceptible to moisture damage, and a door that once operated easily may have a hard time opening and closing after a few years of moisture damage, causing the door or the threshold to swell. If you find that your door no longer operates easily, you should replace it.

Aesthetics

Another reason you may want to consider replacing your front door is if it is dented, cracked, has chipping paint, or cloudy, condensed glass. If your front door has seen better days, you may want to replace it simply to improve your home’s curb appeal!

Squeaky Hinges

While a squeaky hinge may be handled with a bit of grease and maintenance, if it continues to reoccur, take it as a sign that your door is nearing the end of its lifespan.  It’s possible that you could simply replace the hinges and continue to use the door, but generally if your door’s hardware is wearing away, it’s generally a good indication that your door may be as well.  Examine your doors structural integrity before deciding to replace it simply due to squeaky hinges, but take it as a sign.
